Membrane technology use in the low-temperature hydrogen recovery section of the ethylene process.

Summary

The hydrogen produced in a conventional ethylene process is normally recovered from cracked gas with an energy intensive cold box separation unit. To reduce the capital and energy costs associated with this specific separation, a study has investigated the feasibility of using membrane technology to recover part of the hydrogen in an optimal manner before it enters the cold box. Two commercial polyimide membranes as well as a new polysulfone membrane were evaluated for this separation. The performance of the membranes and their effects on the overall ethylene process are included in this assessment.
