Type of article: Article

Summary

THE HEAD OF AN ATOM PROBE FIELD ION MICROSCOPE IS DESCRIBED. THE SPECIMEN IS COOLED WITH THE HELP OF A CRYOGENERATOR AND THE PULSE COUPLING ON THE TIP IS ACHIEVED WITH A NEARBY RING. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS SHOW THAT THE CHARGE STATE RATIO DEPENDS OF THE ANALYSIS TEMPERATURE OF THE IRIDIUM SAMPLE. THESE RESULTS LEAD TO A THERMALLY ACTIVATED PROCESS FOR FIELD EVAPORATION OF IRIDIUM OVER 30 K.
