Summary

This is the second part of the Spanish translation of a paper presented at the IIR meeting in Dinan, France (see the Bulletin of the IIR, reference 2007-0346). The work investigates the coupling of natural stones with PCMs and epoxy resins in order to produce new forms of building materials with controlled thermal and dynamic load, appropriate for improvement of building thermal/cooling behaviour. The objective is to analyze the influence of PCMs when included in the resin formulations (type of PCM and percentage added to the resin formulation) to create layers that coat and impregnate the natural stone and the consequent effect in the properties of the stones. The thermophysical properties of a wide range of PCMs have been assessed in order to identify the most appropriate candidates. Measured properties of epoxy mixtures containing various amounts of PCMs include viscosity of the mixtures, epoxy degradation temperature and glass transition temperature. A distinct modification of the thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity values is measured due to the coating of the stone with PCMs, indicating potentials for liberation of the stored heat at low temperatures. The lower peak temperatures of natural stones coated with PCMs, is expected to reduce thermal shocks and increase the durability of the materials, improve thermal comfort and reduce heating and cooling requirements thereby producing energy and related cost savings.
