Summary

At present, the world is very much concerned how to resolve the climate change issue and how this can be done via a variety of policy, technology and societal measures. The introduction gives a walk from the past (circa 1970s) to the present, so that a description of the path to the future has a proper perspective for environmental topics, including relevant climate and RACHP issues. In the light of all past events, a number of currently important issues are dealt with. In the first instance, sustainability is highlighted. Next, the framework of IPCC reports and their guidance is presented, including the definition of net zero, and a description of efforts as currently undertaken for a net zero society. Important is the contribution to a rapid decrease of greenhouse gas emissions in the short term. The developments of refrigerants and their contribution to emissions will be analysed, while considering the impact of Kigali consumption reduction measures. The RACHP sector is going to be largely dependent on available renewable electricity for achieving a 2050 net-zero target. That also implies a number of measures, including better performance and possible different uptakes, to reduce the dependence on renewable power generation, and embracing a different way of thinking than just focusing on energy efficiency improvements. The setting of only a long-term 2050 target is not going to be sufficient enough, as it is shown that one has to change and optimize specific RACHP subsectors up to 2030 first, via demand optimisation and performance improvements.
