Summary

This paper presents a new refrigeration system that does not use any refrigerant gas. This is an environmentally friendly and energy efficient system, based on a technological breakthrough: the gas free magnetocaloric refrigeration (MCR). A demonstrator will be presented and its performance described: cooling power of 110 W, temperature span of 33 degrees or more between the cold sink and the hot sink. An approach of the thermodynamic laws ruling the functioning of the magnetocaloric system is also given. The innovating field of the MCR, based on magnetocaloric effect and materials, is an interdisciplinary subject which is now an alternative for the heating and cooling applications. A MCR equipment in development can vary its cooling power up to several kilowatts. The next phase is the industrialization of this equipment.
