Summary

This study investigates the hypothesis of a lower intensity of surfactant-induced Marangoni convection, and the existence of a corresponding temperature limitation of the phenomenon, at higher sorptive solution temperatures owing to weaker surface tension gradients observed in corresponding conditions. The surface tension measurements enable the estimation of the characteristic gradients required to calculate the Marangoni numbers related to thermal- and mass fraction-gradients in a range of solution temperatures between 30°C and 80°C. Consequently, a bi-dimensional numerical model to investigate the intensity of Marangoni convection in a corresponding range of conditions. Simulation runs are conducted for a 1-mm thick aqueous Lithium Bromide solution with initial 60% mass fraction 80 ppm of 1-Octanol, interfacing a constant wall temperature equal to the initial solution temperature and a pressure-controlled vapour environment. Results demonstrates that the sorption enhancement related to Marangoni convection decreases by approximately 33% as the solution temperature increases from 30°C to 80°C.
