Summary

This work aims to analyse the thermal behaviour of seven commercial organic PCMs with melting temperature between 2 °C and 9 °C proposed for refrigerating applications such as refrigerated transport and air conditioning. The charging and discharging phases are experimentally studied for each PCM. The liquid PCM is poured inside an aluminium sample having dimensions 40x40x60 mm which is immersed inside a thermostatic bath. The thermostatic bath was set 9 K colder than the PCM melting temperature. Instead, during the discharging phase the PCM is melted by immersing the sample in a thermostatic bath set 9 K warmer than the PCM melting temperature. The temperature distribution within the sample is experimentally investigated and the total phase change time is compared. This work aims to add information that is currently not available in the literature and to encourage designers to use PCMs also in low temperature applications.
