THE PAPER SURVEYS THE THREE MAIN TOPICS INVESTIGATED RECENTLY IN ITALY IN THE FIELD OF MATERIALS FOR ENERGY SAVING IN BUILDINGS. 1) MATERIALS FOR INCREASING THE THERMAL CAPACITY OF BUILDING STRUCTURES: POLYHYDRIC ALCOHOLS (PENTAERYTHRITOL TE, TRIMETHYLOLETHANE TME, NEOPENTYLGLYCOL NPG) PRESENT A SOLID-SOLID PHASE CHANGE WITH A FAIRLY HIGH ENTHALPY CHANGE AT TRANSITION TEMPERATURES SUITABLE TO INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL, WHEN THEY ARE MIXED TO FORM EUTECTICS. THESE COMPOUNDS CAN BE BLENDED WITH CONCRETE, SO INCREASING THE STRUCTURE EQUIVALENT THERMAL CAPACITY UP TO SEVEN TIMES. UNFORTUNATELY, TESTS CARRIED OUT HAVE GIVEN RATHER DISAPPOINTING RESULTS. 2) INSULATING MATERIALS: A LARGE AMOUNT OF WORK HAS BEEN DEVOTED TO THE DECAY OF INSULATING POWER OVER TIME.
