Summary

This research building in Colorado maximises daylight while limiting heat gain by selective use of shading and low-emissivity glasses. Other measures are built-in thermal storage, heat recovery, variable fresh air supply and the use of direct or indirect evaporative cooling, depending on the load and ambient conditions. The mechanical chillers run for only 14% of the year. Total energy use is estimated at 30% less than the new Federal Standard. Building costs have been kept below normal for this type of building.
