A STUDY HAS BEEN MADE OF THE INFLUENCE OF CARBON AND ALUMINIUM ADDITIONS ON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES UNDER UNIAXIAL TENSILE LOADING AND BY CHARPY V NOTCH IMPACT TESTS AT ROOM TEMPERATURE AND 77 K (-196.C) ON THE FE 24% MN ALLOYS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE FE 24% MN, 5% AL, 0.2% C APPEARS AS A NEW NICKEL-FREE IRON-BASED ALLOY WHICH IS PARTICULARLY INTERESTING FOR CRYOGENIC APPLICATIONS.
