Summary

SINCE THE INCIDENTS OF LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE, THERE HAS BEEN A SWITCH TO AIR-COOLED PACKAGED WATER CHILLERS FOR AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEMS. THESE ARE INVARIABLY MOUNTED ON ROOFS WHERE AIR AVAILABILITY IS ADEQUATE. NOISE FROM CONDENSER FANS AND COMPRESSORS CAN BE A NUISANCE. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS MANY MANUFACTURERS GIVE INSUFFICIENT NOISE DATA FOR THEIR UNITS. SOME ROUGH RULES ARE DISCUSSED, ALSO METHODS OF TESTING AND IDEAS FOR ACOUSTIC TREATMENT. D.W. H.
