Summary
This is the first part of the cycle of the papers dealing with noise and vibrations in air-conditioning and ventilation systems as the most important sources in apartment building and public buildings, e.g. hospitals. The basic physical concepts of noise and vibrations have been presented. The basic quantities describing these phenomena have been described: sounds, ultrasounds, infrasounds. The following quantities have been described: threshold of audibility, acoustic pressure, sound intensity, sound power, loudness, scales of loudness, and indices of noise assessment. The paper contains many diagrams and tables.
