Non-metal liquid helium cryostat for SQUID operation.

Author(s) : KARUNANITHI R., JACOB S., KASTHURIRENGAN S., et al.

Summary

In this paper, the performance of a non-metal liquid helium cryostat for operating SQUIDs for NDT studies is reported. A GFRP liquid helium cryostat with carbon fabric radiation shield was designed and developed. The salient features of the cryostat are: the distance between the pickup coil at 4.2 K and the outer bottom flange is about 6 mm (including the flange thickness) and the radiation shields are made of carbon fabric. The capacity of the cryostat is about 5 liters for liquid helium with a neck and tail inner diameter of about 50 mm. The steady state evaporation rate without the dipstick is about 175 ml/hour of liquid helium.
