Summary

AT LOW TEMPERATURE, IN METALS AND TYPE II HARD SUPERCONDUCTORS PLACED IN A LIQUID, FOR A CERTAIN STRAIN-INDUCED HEAT EVOLUTION LEVEL, THERE ARE NONLINEAR WAVES OF TWO TYPES. IN SUCH A SYSTEM, AS THE HEAT EVOLUTION VARIES, THERE MAY OCCUR A TRANSITION FROM ONE UNIFORM STABLE SOLUTION TO ANOTHER ; THE KINETICS OF THE TRANSITION IS QUITE SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE ORDER-DISORDER TRANSITION DESCRIBABLE WITH THE LANDAU -KHALATNIKOV RELATION. EQUATIONS ARE OBTAINED TO RELATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NONLINEAR WAVES TO THE DISCONTINUOUS FLOW THEY INDUCE.
