Summary

The numerical simulation of eight configurations indicates: 1) fins in the form of rectangular winglets that generate strong longitudinal vortices have a great potential for heat transfer enhancement in plate-fin heat exchangers; 2) maximum average heat transfer enhancement of up to a factor five could be achieved at small angles of attack, 15 deg for the in-line, symmetric winglet vortex generator configuration when the vortex generator are attached alternating to both the plates. But the additional pressure loss is also high; 3) careful numerical calculations and/or experience are necessary for the selection of near-optimal vortex generator configurations.
