Summary

Oscillating flow phenomena in orifice pulse-tube refrigerators that have a tapered pulse-tube wall were studied by using a smoke-wire flow visualization method. Effect of taper angle on secondary streaming induced in the pulse tube was studied for various taper angles. As the taper angle increased, the velocity profile of the secondary streaming changed from a V-like shape to a U-like shape. The tapered pulse tube with an optimum angle had a minimum mass flow rate for the secondary streaming and had the highest improvement in cooling performance.
