Summary

Today’s refrigeration systems have to use a defined portion of oil to lubricate mechanical parts in compressors. As a result a small amount of the oil added to the compressor enters the system via the working fluid.

The benefits of oil-free R744 systems compared to conventional system are evaluated for various applications: commercial refrigeration, transport refrigeration, onboard refrigerated sea water (RSW) production and industrial heat pumping systems. Generally installation costs are reduced due to simplified oil-free system architecture. In addition, reduction in servicing and maintenance efforts as well as improved system performance lead to greater energy efficient operations. As a result life cycle costs (LCC) of oil-free systems are reduced in comparaison to conventional systems. Part of the CREATIV project is to develop a hermetic oil-free compressor.

In 2011, a pilot compressor was developed and installed in a laboratory and will later be applied to specific pilot applications.
