Summary

CLEANING FOULING DEPOSITS FROM THE INNER SURFACE OF HEAT EXCHANGER TUBES HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PROBLEM. CHEMICAL ADDITION TO THE FLUID MAY FURTHER CORROSION AND CAUSE ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION. MANUAL SCRAPING REQUIRES A SHUT DOWN AND IS OF SHORT BENEFIT. CONTINUOUS CIRCULATION OF SPONGE-RUBBER BALLS SLIGHTLY OVERSIZED FIT INTO THE TUBE, SUCH THAT EACH TUBE RECEIVES A BALL ABOUT EVERY FIVE MINUTES, GENTLY REMOVES DEPOSITS AS THEY OCCUR. BALLS WITH AN ABRASIVE SURFACE ARE AVAILABLE FOR SHORT PERIOD CLEANING OF DIRTY TUBES. EXAMPLES ARE QUOTED OF A STEAM CONDENSER IN A CRACKING PLANT SHOWING CONSIDERABLE INCREASES IN EFFICIENCY.D. W.
