Summary

PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS ARE NOW MADE WITH SMALL SECTION, MULTIPLE, FLUID CHANNELS, AND CONSTRUCTION EITHER BRAZED OR DEMOUNTABLE FOR MECHANICAL CLEANING. SUCH EXCHANGERS HAVE BEEN FOUND TO OPERATE SUCCESSFULLY AS REFRIGERANT EVAPORATORS AND CONDENSERS, PARTICULARLY WHERE THE HEAT TRANSPORT FLUID IS WATER OR GLYCOL. BOTH BOILING AND CONDENSING COEFFICIENTS ARE UNUSUALLY HIGH DUE TO THE SMALL FLOW-CHANNEL SECTIONS AND HEAT EXCHANGE CAN BE TRULY COUNTERCURRENT, ENABLING A VERY NEAR APPROACH OF REFRIGERANT TEMPERATURE TO THAT OF THE COOLED OR COOLING FLUID. EVEN PARTIAL FREEZING CAN BE TOLERATED AS THE CONSTRUCTION IS SUFFICIENTLY FLEXIBLE TO ALLOW FOR ICE EXPANSION. FOULING OR CORROSION FACTORS ARE LOW AS PLATES ARE MADE NORMALLY FROM TITANIUM. D.W.H.
