Summary

Onions are an important export product for The Netherlands, consumption onions as well as seeds and sets. In this review paper, developments in the onion production industry in The Netherlands are described together with applied onion research in the past 15 years. Onion quality and the sustainability of onion production were major items in the research program. The article reviews results on control of downy mildew, white rot, neck rot and fusarium basal rot. Also, the practice of weed control in The Netherlands is described. Furthermore, attention is paid to the development of a nitrogen split application advisory system. Finally, the article discusses future needs for onion research.
