OPERATING EXPERIENCES GAINED IN CRYOGENIC AIR SEPARATION PLANTS WITH RESPECT TO ENERGY CONSUMPTION.

Author(s) : ROHDE W.

Summary

FOR THE PRODUCTION OF GASEOUS OXYGEN AND NITROGEN, ENERGY CONSUMPTION DEPENDS MAINLY ON THE VOLUME OF AIR REQUIRED FOR FRACTIONATION AND ON PRESSURE. A CONSUMPTION OF ABOUT 0.4 KILOWATTHOUR/NM3 OXYGEN CAN BE OBTAINED, A FIGURE VALID FOR UP-TO-DATE UNITS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADSORPTION SYSTEM FOR THE TREATMENT OF AIR BEFORE FRACTIONATION. THE OLD UNITS CONSUME ABOUT 0.43 KILOWATTHOUR/NM3 OXYGEN. IF THE PRODUCTS HAVE TO BE LIQUEFIED, ENERGY IS REQUIRED FOR LIQUEFACTION. IN ORDER TO COMPARE THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION FOR LIQUEFACTION, THE LIQUEFACTION ENERGY IS RELATED TO NM3 EQUIVALENT NITROGEN. WHEN THE LIQUEFIER IS INCLUDED IN THE FRACTIONATION UNIT, CONSUMPTION RATES ARE LOWER THAN 0.5 KILOWATTHOUR/NM3 NITROGEN AGAINST 1 KILOWATTHOUR/NM3 FOR THE UNITS OF THE 50'S.
