Optimal refrigerant selection: ammonia, the natural refrigerant for industrial applications.

Author(s) : KORFITSEN E.

Type of article: Article, Case study

Summary

The use of environmentally friendly refrigerants and in particular natural refrigerants is constantly growing as the impact of the Kyoto Protocol becomes stronger and the new EU ozone regulation changes the situation for the use of HCFC. In addition, national phase-out schemes for HFCs are introduced and environment taxes on the use of greenhouse gases increase the incentives to choose ammonia as the long term refrigerant for industrial applications. Within the industrial refrigeration sector, R717 has been used as a refrigerant for many, many years. Almost as long as there has been mechanical refrigeration, ammonia has been used in refrigeration plants. This has ensured the development and optimisation of products and systems for ammonia applications.
