Summary

The oil and gas industry produces large volumes of wastewater with moderate salinity, creating opportunities for reuse through advanced treatment technologies. QatarEnergy LNG has implemented a Wastewater Reduction and Reuse (WRR) facility utilizing membrane bioreactors (MBR), activated carbon filtration (ACF), and reverse osmosis (RO) to reduce disposal volumes and recover water for boiler feed. Bench-scale studies confirmed >80% COD removal by MBR and >99% TDS rejection by RO. Optimization efforts evaluated ACF’s role in improving RO performance and explored forward osmosis (FO) for brine volume reduction. FO trials demonstrated a 50% reduction in RO concentrate without organic passage, enabling environmentally responsible disposal. Overall, technology validation and optimization are key for the successful implementation of advanced water treatment technologies for the treatment of industrial wastewater within the oil and gas industry.
