Summary
In Mediterranean and subtropical countries, the financing of modern hospitals presents important difficulties. Air conditioning is only installed in operating theatres, x-ray rooms, wards and main laboratories. The author intends to show how, in spite of limited funds, air conditioning may be installed in all areas both where it is essential and where it is merely desirable. The case in study is an 800 bed general hospital located in Basrah city. The study concludes that using a plant of a size 20% larger than that required for the essential areas, will bring comfortable conditions over most of the day during the season when cooling is required. The study shows also that the percentage saving by using the suggested plant is 34.6%.
