OVERSEAS TRANSPORTATION OF POTTED ORNAMENTAL FOLIAGE PLANTS IN INTEGRAL REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS.

Summary

A TEST ON TRANSPORT WAS CARRIED OUT FOR 20 SPECIES OF ORNAMENTAL POTTED PLANT IN 4 REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS. DURING AND AFTER TRANSIT, THE TEMPERATURE IN THE 4 CONTAINERS WAS MAINTAINED AT 285.5 OR 287.4 K (12.5 OR 14.4 DEG C). RH REMAINED CONSTANT. HOWEVER, IN THREE CONTAINERS, IT WAS SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN THE DESIRED RH (90-95%). WITH THE AIR EXCHANGE PORTS CLOSED, THE CO2 LEVEL REMAINED LOWER THAN 0.5%. AFTER 2 WEEK TRANSPORT IN THE DARK, THE PLANTS, EXCEPT CALAMONDINS, WERE INPERFECT CONDITION. THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE DUE TO ACCLIMATIZATION PRIOR TO SHIPMENT AND TO THE GOOD PERFORMANCE OF REFRIGERATED CONTAINERS.
