Overview on progress in leak tightness of centrifugal water chillers in Europe.

Author(s) : CLODIC D., PALANDRE L.

Summary

The paper presents an European overview of centrifugal water chillers, including: the evolution of both refrigerants and of refrigerant quantities needed for new systems and for servicing; essential actions for the implementation of emission limitation policy covering both design and servicing of systems; and forecasts, for the years 2008-2012, of HFC emissions of European centrifugal water chillers. Three scenarios of refrigerant emissions of chillers are presented. A survey on about 150 chillers performed by a French association of major owners of chillers, indicates that improvement of the maintenance methods have reduced already refrigerant emissions by 50%. Results obtained in the Netherlands indicate the same tendency.
