WITH HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT TECHNIQUES BECOMING MORE AVAILABLE, ONE MUST ASSESS THE EFFECTS OF USING A GIVEN ENHANCEMENT METHOD OR SELECTING AMONG SEVERAL ALTERNATIVE METHODS. TRADE-OFFS MUST BE MADE BETWEEN HEAT EXCHANGER SIZE, PRESSURE DROP, PUMPING POWER, FLOW RATES, TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCES, AND HEAT TRANSFER RATES. STARTING WITH THE GENERAL FORMULATION OF THERMAL-HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR SINGLE-PHASE FLOW, A METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR RANKING SEVERAL ENHANCEMENT ALTERNATIVES WHICH IS ILLUSTRATED BY SELECTING THE APPROPRIATE, HELICAL RIBBED TUBES FOR WATER-SIDE HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT IN A FLOODED-EVAPORATOR WATER CHILLER.
