Advanced modelling of liquid overfeed evaporators.

Author(s) : OLIET C., PÉREZ-SEGARRA C. D., MORALES S., et al.

Summary

This paper is devoted to the presentation of the current development stage of a new advanced model for fin-and-tube evaporators. The transient nature of frosting and defrosting in this equipment has demanded to link previous unsteady formulation of the air and refrigerant sides to a novel full transient analysis of the fin-and-tube solid core. This paper presents the coupling of this new solid unsteady multidimensional modelling with an internal refrigerant simulation based on a quasi-homogeneous two-phase flow model. Taking advantage of the new tube angular discretization, attention has been centred on the use of advanced flow-pattern map based correlations, where segregated dry/wet heat transfer coefficients can be obtained. The paper presents the recently developed solid core model, introduces the flow pattern map based correlations, the refrigerant mathematical model used, and focuses on the coupling between them. A characteristic liquid overfeed evaporator has been used to analyse and illustrate the impact of the proposed model.
