Summary
Liquid desiccant systems are attracting attention as an alternative air conditioning technology with humidity control that provides higher performance and better indoor air quality while using natural working fluids. The utilization of non-corrosive ionic liquids has enabled achieving efficient humidity control and heat transfer within a single three-fluid aluminum contactor. On the other hand, previous research identified poor wettability and uneven liquid distribution as limiting factors due to increased heat- and mass-transfer resistances. In this study, a modified distributor design with extruded tubes and advanced surface treatments of the contactor were investigated to address these issues. The impact of the new distributor and the new surface treatments was evaluated and discussed in terms of wettability, and instability characteristics, as well as transfer performance improvement. Results
showed that surface treatment improved dehumidification efficiency by up to 10%, and the use of a modified distributor improved dehumidification efficiency by an additional 10%.
