Summary

TEMPERATURE-SENSITIVE EQUIPMENT SUCH AS COMMUNICATION ELECTRONICS CAN SUFFER DAMAGE AND BREAKDOWN IF COOLING SYSTEMS FAIL. THERMAL STORAGE, USINGMATERIALS HAVING A SUITABLE FUSION RANGE CAN DELAY TEMPERATURE CHANGES IN THE EVENT OF PLANT STOPPAGE. TESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT ELECTRONICS OPERATION HAS BEEN SECURED FOR UP TO 10 HOURS WITHOUT MECHANICAL COOLING. SUCH MATERIALS ARE CURRENTLY USED IN CAPSULE FORM, BUT THERE IS SCOPE FOR MAKING THEM AS PART OF A BUILDING STRUCTURE. FLAT < HEAT PIPE > PANELS WILL TRANSFER HEAT IN ONE DIRECTION ONLY, COLLECTING OR LOSING HEAT AS MAY BE REQUIRED. A.R.T.
