Placement of wall insulation.
Author(s) : TRETHOWEN H. A., COX-SMITH I. R.
Type of article: Article
Summary
Insulation can be placed centrally in wall or ceiling cavities, with a real increase in thermal rating, provided that the edge gaps are sufficiently small. For walls, "sufficiently small" may mean less than 1 mm, depending on the cavity height, whilst for flat ceilings it may mean 3-4 mm. If these limits are breached then the overall insulation R-Value of the structure will be heavily reduced, to half or less, by the onset of convective air circulation. If the insulant is pushed against either inner or outer face of the cavity, this loss of performance does not occur.
