Summary
The Executive Committee and Board of Directors of ARI (Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration Institute) approved a policy statement of climate change: 1) there should be an ongoing international scientific assessment of climate change issues; 2) there should be a comprehensive, rather than a gas by gas, approach to controlling emissions, however the relative contribution of each emissions-contributing gas or sector should be weighed; 3) policy-makers should use the Total Equivalent Warming Impact (TEWI) index to measure the global warming contributions of energy-using systems. Use of technologies with lower TEWI should be encouraged as a means of saving energy; 4) increased energy savings is an important way to meet Framework Convention on Climate Change commitments.
