Summary

ONE STRATEGY FOR CONTROLLING INDOOR AIR CONTAMINANTS IS LOCAL AIR CLEANING. THE ABILITY TO REMOVE GASES AND PARTICLES FROM AIR CONTAMINATED WITH TOBACCO SMOKE IS OFTEN AN IMPORTANT FEATURE. USUALLY THE DEVICES ARE LABORATORY TESTED. HOWEVER, THIS INVESTIGATION SHOWS THAT THE EFFECTIVENESS ADDITIONALLY IS HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON THE GENERAL OF AIR FLOW PATTERN IN THE VENTILATED SPACE. THIS IMPLIES THAT THE VENTILATING PRINCIPLE IS OF MAJOR IMPORTANCE WITH REGARD TO THE RESULTING EFFECTIVENESS.
