Summary

HEAT PUMPS CAN PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN REALISING ENERGY SAVING. THE LARGE VARIETY OF HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS MAKES THIS TECHNOLOGY SUITABLE FOR DIVERGENT HEATING TASKS, ESPECIALLY IN THE BUILDING ENVIRONMENT. A SURVEY IS GIVEN OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEAT PUMP. SHOWS HOW SAVINGS OF PRIMARY ENERGY CAN BE CALCULATED AND IN WHAT ORDER OF MAGNITUDE THESE SAVINGS ARE. THE PRESENT LEVEL OF FIRST COSTS OF HEAT PUMP UNITS AND SYSTEMS IS ALSO INDICATED. IMPORTANT IS THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN (ELECTRO) MECHANICAL MACHINES AND APPLIANCES DRIVEN BY HEAT, RUNNING DIRECTLY ON FOSSIL FUEL. ESPECIALLY WITH THE LATTER CATEGORY LARGE ENERGY SAVINGS CAN BE ACHIEVED FOR HEATING PURPOSES. ALSO IN VIEW OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR NATURAL GAS IN THE NETHERLANDS THE THERMALLY DRIVEN HEAT PUMP IS PARTICULARLY INTERESTING. FURTHER PARTS OF THE ARTICLE ARE: NEW AND ANTICIPATED DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF HEAT PUMPS IN THE NETHERLANDS AND ABROAD, ARCHITECTURAL TEMS AND TWO ILLUSTRATIONS OF APPLICATION.
