Precision irradiation modelling of self-shading facades.

Author(s) : MARDALJEVIC J., LOMAS K.

Summary

This paper describes the precision modelling of irradiation incident on glazing set in the deep-reveals of self-shading facades. The deep-reveal facade used for this study was closely based on the design concepts for the Judson College building (Elgin, Illinois, USA). A key consideration for the study was the characterisation of the window reveal in terms of the quality (i.e. direct or diffuse) as well as the magnitude of the incident irradiation received at the glazing. The radiation transfer was predicted using validated lighting simulation techniques rather than the more usual thermal modelling approaches.
