Summary

The European Union Heat Pump Concerted Action Group (HPCAG) was supported within the framework of the JOULE non-nuclear energy R&D programme of the European commission under the management of Dr G. Deschamps of DGXII. Originally established in 1992, the operation of the HPCAG was integrated with a wide-ranging "Concerted Action Activity" on heat pumps in January 1994, and the project was completed at the end of December 1995. The Concerted Action Activity was essentially a technology transfer exercise, directed particularly at heat pumps in buildings. The project comprises four sections: a Heat Pump Handbook, written in Dutch and published by ISSO in the Netherlands ; a Heat Pump Market Study, covering ten European countries; a Heat Pump Expert System, to assist specifiers in selecting appropriate heat pumps for domestic space heating and associated functions, and a Heat Pump Newsletter, which was regularly published throughout the course of the project. Some other initiatives have been taken. The HPCAG acted as a regular forum for guidance on the above tasks, and to transfer technology between the Group members, who came from both within and out with the European Union. The paper describes the various activities carried out over the two year period of the main project.
