Pressure drop and visualization of adiabatic R134a two-phase flow inside a chevron type plate heat exchanger.

Author(s) : CLAESSON J., SIMANIC B.

Summary

Two-phase flow inside a compact brazed plate heat exchanger of chevron type was experimentally investigated. The outer corrugated plate was manufactured from transparent material; hence, visual inspection of the flow has been possible. Different mass flow rates (corresponding to heat flux of 5-15 kW/m2) and thermodynamic qualities (from 0.1-0.7) have been tested. Flow structures were visually investigated and the pressure drop in the heat exchanger, including the ports, was measured. The frictional pressure drop in two-phase adiabatic flow in the corrugated channel was estimated from the measured total pressure drop and was successfully correlated using the two-phase multiplier and the Lockhart-Martinelli parameter.
