THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES A UNIQUE PLANT MANUFACTURING ICE FOR USE IN DEEP MINE COOLING. THE SYSTEM USES VERTICAL, DOUBLE-PIPE, EVAPORATOR TUBES. LIQUID AMMONIA ENTERS THE CENTRE PIPE AND EVAPORATED VAPOUR RETURNS VIA THE ANNULUS, WHILE WATER IS SPRAYED ON THE OUTER PIPE FOR ICE FORMATION. HARVESTING IS BY HOT GAS. THE TOTAL EVAPORATOR IS ARRANGED IN 12 MODULES OF 80 TUBES EACH. SEQUENCING OF ICE-MAKING AND HARVESTING IS BY A PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER WITH FINE SETTINGS FOR THE RESPECTIVE TIMES REQUIRED.
