Summary
The article describes the different refrigerating installations installed in South African mines since 1986, and gives an assessment of the world's largest ice plant, which was installed at the ERPM gold mine in Boksburg in 1991. The new system used in the plant, based on spraying of the refrigerant on the internal surfaces of the tubes, is presented, along with its condensers, cooling towers, control and security.
