THE ADDRESS LOOKS AT THE EVOLUTION IN REFRIGERANTS, FROM THE DAYS OF SO2 TO THE ADVENT OF HALOCARBONS, FROM EARLY COLD AIR MACHINES TO TODAY'S SCREW COMPRESSORS AND OTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN HEAT TRANSFER EQUIPMENT, CONTROLS AND SYSTEM DESIGN. THE AUTHOR PREDICTS THAT THE MAIN AREAS OF CHANGES IN THE FUTURE WILL BE SMALLER AND SIMPLER COMPRESSORS, SMALLER AND MORE RELIABLE SYSTEMS ACCOMPANIED BY COMPUTER CONTROL AND MONITORING SYSTEMS.
