Summary

IT IS SHOWN THAT THE PROPERTIES OF THE QUASI-STATIONARY STATE OF A COULOMB BLOCKADE IN TUNNEL JUNCTIONS WITH A LOW CONDUCTIVITY CAN BE DESCRIBED ADEQUATELY AT LOW TEMPERATURES IN TERMS OF MACROSCOPIC QUANTUM TUNNELLING OF THE CHARGE. THE DESCRIPTION IS DUAL WITH RESPECT TO THE DESCRIPTION OF JUNCTIONS IN TERMS OF MACROSCOPIC QUANTUM TUNNELLING OF THE JOSEPHSON PHASE DIFFERENCE. THE PROBABILITY OF MACROSCOPIC QUANTUM TUNNELLING OF A CHARGE WAS CALCULATED FOR A SINGLE JUNCTION AS WELL AS FOR A SYSTEM OF SEVERAL JUNCTIONS.
