PROSPECTS FOR LONG DISTANCE TRANSPORT.

PERSPECTIVES DES TRANSPORTS A LONGUE DISTANCE.

Author(s) : NYGAARD H., GRITZ W.

Summary

THE ARTICLE DEALS WITH THE LONG DISTANCE MOVEMENT OF PERISHABLE MERCHANDISE. BY MEANS OF 4 CASE-STUDIES, THE ECONOMIC AND ORGANISATIONAL ASPECTS OF LONG-DISTANCE TRAFFIC ARE SET OUT AND INCLUDE MOVEMENTS OF FRESH PRODUCTS WHICH ARE CONVEYED FOR DISTANCES OF OVER 2,000 KM. THE STUDIES DEAL WITH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE CHANGES WHICH ARISE DURING LONG DISTANCE TRANSITS PLUS THE LOGISTICAL REQUIREMENTS OF LOADERS. OBSERVATIONS HAVE SHOWN THAT MORE AND MORE GROUPS OF WAGONS OR COMPLETE TRAIN LOADS ARE BEING OPERATED. SO FAR AS THE REFRIGERANT IS CONCERNED, OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS WATER-ICE WILL REMAIN THE MAIN REFRIGERANT FOR RAIL-TRAFFIC ON ACCOUNT OF ITS ENVIRONMENTAL AND COST BENEFITS. THE USEOF DRY-ICE WILL ALSO REMAIN CONSTANT.
