Summary

The author considers factors influencing growth, notably the consumer, technology and trade. Specific application to the European Community is considered with agriculture, legislation, and economy of scale of production being added to the argument. The effect of this growth on transport, notably costs, logistic demands, distances and the relative benefits of road and rail are discussed. Better integration between size of package, the transport medium and cold stores is necessary to increase efficiency and improve quality maintenance. G.R.S.
