Prototype self-cooling can developed.

Type of article: Article

Summary

In the USA a self cooling disposable soft drink can has been designed. This makes use of an adsorption process. The can contains the beverage in an upper chamber, desiccant in a lower. These are linked by a tube to the space above the beverage which is charged with water vapour after a vacuum has been pulled. On opening the tube, water vapour is adsorbed by the desiccant, thus lowering the pressure above the beverage causing it to evaporate and decrease in temperature. The same technique may be used to cool the contents of a re-usable jug by building in a heating element to re-activate the desiccant. D.W.H.
