PULSE TUBE REFRIGERATOR: AN ALTERNATIVE CRYOCOOLER.

Author(s) : RICHARDSON R. N.

Type of article: Article

Summary

IN THE PULSE TUBE, REFRIGERATION IS PRODUCED WITHOUT THEUSE OF ACTIVE COMPONENTS OPERATING AT LOW TEMPERATURE THUS OBVIATING A MAJOR SOURCE OF UNRELIABILITY. ALTHOUGH ITS COP IS LIKELY TO BE LOWER THAN THAT OF ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS IT IS NOT APPARENT WHY THIS SHOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO ACCOUNT FORTHE RELATIVE LACK OF INTEREST IN THE DEVICE GIVEN ITS OBVIOUS ADVANTAGE OF INHERENT RELIABILITY. THE PAPER REVIEWS PREVIOUS PULSE TUBE RESEARCH AND PRESENTS BOTH THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS FROM A NEW INVESTIGATION WHICH HELP EXPLAIN THE NATURE OF THE DEVICE. THE ANALYSIS INCLUDES A METHOD OF PREDICTING OPTIMUM PULSE RATE.
