Summary
The non-invasive inspection of exchangers by Foucaults multi-frequency currents is applicable to non-magnetic and magnetic tubes. It is effected according to a "standard bank" composed of reference tubes, identical to those of the exchangers and with all their possible failures. With these reference tubes, depth-phase curves are plotted to identify real tube failures. Foucault currents, induced in a conductor placed in a variable magnetic field, spread out according to well known distribution laws. Any discontinuity in the material modifies this distribution and, consequently the apparent impedance of the sensor. The signal is treated, amplified, filtered and visualized on a cathode ray screen.
