THIS PAPER IS A SURVEY AND INCLUDES ALSO INFORMATION ABOUT HEAT-INDUCED PRESSURE-, TEMPERATURE-AND FLOW-TRANSIENTS IN HELIUM COOLING SYSTEMS. THE LATEST RESULTS OF THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF A SPACE AND TIME DEPENDENT ENERGY INPUT INTO THE COOLING SYSTEM OF A FORCED FLOW COOLED SUPERCONDUCTING MAGNET ARE REPORTED. BESIDE THE QUESTION OF STATIONARY COOLING CONDITIONS THE PROBLEM OF TRANSIENT HEAT TRANSFER TO FLOWING AND STAGNANT HELIUM HAS GAINED SPECIAL ATTENTION IN THE LAST YEARS.
