THE DISCOVERY OF HIGH CRITICAL TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTORS WITH ZERO RESISTANCE AT TEMPERATURES ABOVE 90 K OPENED UP MANY EXCITING PROSPECTS FOR THE APPLICATION OF SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS. IN CHINA SEVERAL INSTITUTES AND UNIVERSITIES HAVE BEGUN RESEARCH WORK IN THIS FIELD. HERE A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF SOME OF THE IMPORTANT ADVANCES IN THIS FIELD IN 1989.
