Summary
The trends of R&D in commercial refrigeration are discussed with particular reference to experiences being carried out by industries and research institutions in the NW of Italy, in order to enhance the energy and environmental performance of equipment and components. This trend involves the whole chain of product innovation, from design down to manufacturing and marketing, including the application to new sectors. Particular effort is placed on optimising the performance of compressors and heat exchangers, on substituting synthetic refrigerant with natural ones, on applying new insulating materials, and on devising a "cradle-to-grave" design approach.
