Summary

I. MORPHOLOGICAL AND IMMUNOLOGICAL STUDIES IN MONKEYS. SUCCESSFUL RECONSTRUCTIONS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT IN ADULT MONKEYS USING SIMILAR ALLOGENIC LYOPHILISED (FREEZE-DRIED) MANDIBULAR SEGMENTS. GRAFTS TAKEN FROM DONORS WERE WASHED, TRANSFERRED TO THE FREEZE DRIER AND FROZEN AT 213 K (-60DEG C) FOR 1 HR, IMMERSED IN STERILE SOLUTION FOR TWO HOURS, THEN DRIED FOR SEVEN DAYS. STORAGE WAS UNDER VACUUM IN METAL CONTAINERS. PRIOR TO USAGE THE BONE PREPARATION WAS REHYDRATED FOR 12 HOURS IN ANTIBIOTIC SOLUTION. II. CLINICAL APPLICATION. A RECONSTRUCTION OF A PORTION OF RESECTED MANDIBLE WAS CARRIED OUT WITH A LYOPHILISED (FREEZE-DRIED) ALLOGENIC CADAVER MANDIBULAR SEGMENT ON A PATIENT WITH A BENIGN TUMOUR. THE POST OPERATIVE PERIOD WAS WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS AND ALMOST PAIN FREE. RESORPTION OF THE TRANSPLANT SHOWED INDICATIONS AFTER 7 WEEKS, PEAKED AFTER 4 MONTHS AND HAD NOT YET CEASED AFTER 11 MONTHS. FUNCTIONAL AND COSMETIC US BONE TRANSPLANTS WHICH ALSO INVOLVE EXTRA OPERATIONAL RISKS. C.R.F.
